WOOHOO! We made it! Gotta tell ya, we've been on some big planes before, but that 747-400? She a big big girl plane. Used every single inch of London Heathrow asphalt to get that very full, heavy up. Once up, she still climbed super slooowwww. Excellent winds beneath our wings carried us swiftly and far. Off to a land, so different from our own.
Once again, the kiddies slept little; due to excitement. We slept, but still; filled with excitement and anticipation. Our driver, Michael could not have been more lovely. As we left JoBurg aiport and drove through highways, byways and slums; Michael kept us engaged. When the very thin young black man came to Kara's side of the car with hand over heart, hands in prayer and begging for anything that would nourish him - i was at a lose! South Africa is a country very very rich with resources and people and at the same time; so poor and in need. We've spoken to the children; a lot, explaining and explaining, but who knows if they will every truly understand. Slavery was only abolished here 20 years ago, or less. That's when i was 24; if anyone is counting! In 1994 there were still still signs that said "whites" and "blacks". WOW!
Our accomodations here in JoBurg are absolutely lovely. Thanks to Jeff and Maria having lived here for so many years and having wonderful friends. We are staying at their friend'ss boutique hotel for the next few days to regroup, recharge and adjust to it all. Christolph and Peter and fantastic hosts with a beautiful staff of human beings i wish i could take home.
As I sit here in my room very still; just waiting for sleep, the birds out my veranda make calls that are beyond description. Give me time and maybe i will find some poetic prose to describe.
We will post pictures as soon as feasible. Stay with us on this journey as it will be continued in a few short more hours. Night night, we love you all!
